Gateways are the backbone of IoT ecosystem, they facilitate various sensors and controllers to communicate with each other along with provide connectivity with Cloud and Mobile based interfaces.

Platforms enable easy integration and standard interfacing within the IoT ecosystem. For example you can leverage an MQTT client and broker implementation instead of developing your own realtime connectivity backbone which will save a lot of hassle in terms of development.
